“Of Cannibals” is an essay by French humanist writer Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592). It was published in 1580 in the first volume of Montaigne’s Essays, a collection of short, subjective essays Of Cannibals (c. 1580) Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) When King Pyrrhus invaded Italy, having viewed and considered the order of the army the Romans sent out to meet him; "I know not," said he, "what kind of barbarians" (for so the Greeks called all other nations) "these may be; but the disposition Michel de Montaigne: On Cannibals (1580) The discovery of so many new lands in the Renaissance had less impact on most Europeans than one might suppose. Michel de Montaigne’s “Of Cannibals” is a both a quasi-anthropological study of a non-European group of people and their particular customs, and a critical commentary on the nature of civilization and its presuppositions about itself. Montaigne acknowledges that he first saw them as barbarous because of how close they lived to “their original state of nature.” These people had no systems of trade, writing, inheritances, and division of the rich and the poor.
