Rotating drum creates high centrifugal force and due to this high centrifugal force separation of liquid phases in liquid mixture and solid particles are provided. High-density materials collected in the drum interior wall, low by applying centrifugal forces to increase the rate of sedimentation; this is called centrifugal separation. Filtration is the separation of solids from liquids, by causing the mixture to flow through fine pores which are small enough to stop the solid particles but large enough to allow the liquid to pass. In centrifugal or cyclone separators, centrifugal forces act on a droplet at a force several times greater than gravity, as it enters a cylindrical separator (Fig. 5.3). This centrifugal force can range from 5 times gravity in large, low velocity unit to 2000 times gravity in small, high pressure units.
